Canadian Registering a vehicle in the U.s.a.

My sister will soon be moving to the US (4 months) and we are looking to buy a car for her from the United states of america, we desire to buy the car now (we accept found a skilful deal) only she does not have a permanent address in the United states still. Can nosotros still register the vehicle in a US state?

Also is it possible to bring a US vehicle over the boarder with a temporary United states of america permit without going through the import process? We DO Not want to import the motorcar every bit it will be used in the US when she moves in that location.

Thanks for your help

To register a vehicle in virtually states y'all demand to have a U.s. drivers license and insurance. Both of which yous need a fixed address.

Technically a Canadian tin can't bulldoze a US plated car into canada. So driving on temp tags would be impossible, unless the border amanuensis you run into is your loftier school buddy.

Even if you could go it into Canada, getting dorsum into the states would be some other issue, since whatsoever vehicle less than a twelvemonth sometime entering the USA is subject to import duties.

Only to confirm that according to customs, a Canadian is non allowed to drive US plated vehicle. How much they enforce it, I'g not sure. I specifically asked CBA this and was told that expect for a few exceptions, a Canadian could not bulldoze a vehicle with US plates in Canada.

Nosotros regret to inform y'all that simply U.Southward. residents are permitted to drive a U.S.-registered vehicle in Canada. Canadian residents cannot bring a U.Southward. rental vehicle into Canada.

Nether the Temporary Importation of Conveyances by Residents of Canada Regulations (run across Memorandum D2-iv-1 at http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications ... one-eng.html ), a conveyance may exist imported temporarily by a resident in the following cases:

- For personal transportation but from the point of arrival to a specified destination in Canada when the purpose of importation is to transport personally owned goods into or out of Canada. Return must exist inside thirty days.

- When authorized past a customs inspector in instances where a resident is required, due to unforeseen circumstances or emergency reasons, to utilize a conveyance on which duties take not been paid for personal transportation to reach a specified destination in Canada and return.

Nether no circumstances are conveyances open-door nether these regulations for touring purposes or for leisure activities in Canada, nor is whatever local use permitted (e.g., signal-to-point movement in Canada).

In add-on, the Motor Vehicle Condom Deed does non exempt the temporary importation of vehicles by residents from the requirement to register the vehicle in the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) Program and meet all other requirements of the RIV Program. As such, the rental vehicle tin exist imported only if the vehicle enters the RIV Programme and all appropriate fees and taxes are paid.

Nosotros trust that yous find this information helpful. Cheers for contacting the Canada Border Services Agency.

To register a car in the US, you must accept a US license. For many states, all they crave is a valid canadian license, and a permanent address. When I did it in 2005 in Florida, they didn't even have a residency requirement.

Trust me on this one it is strictly enforced. I was involved in a motorcar accident this past summer in S Carolina and had to get special emergency permission to cross the edge with a U.s.a. plated vehicle. I had to show police report and pictures of accident and they let me through so.
